The illumination unit 10 comprises at least one light source provided with a globe 11. The first light source is operable in a first mode to provide a first light display to alert road users to the presence of a crossing. A support post 12 supports the globe at an elevated position. The unit also includes a sensor 20 for detecting a pedestrian in close proximity. A control unit causes at least one light source to operate in a second mode in which the illumination unit provides a second display when a pedestrian is present. The first mode and second modes may be the same pattern but at a higher level of illumination or an additional light source may be triggered. The illumination unit may be part of a pedestrian crossing where the lights may be synchronized or asynchronised. The unit may comnprise a receiver adapted to receive a signal from a remote sensor.
