A welfare cabin has a renewable energy generator 46 (such as wind turbine or solar panel), an electrical system having an energy store 50 arranged to be charged by the renewable energy generator, electrical appliances 40, 58, 36, 56, 58, and a controller 60 arranged to monitor the charge level of the energy store and a power demand of the electrical appliances. The controller can access a log of predicted power consumption and environmental prediction data for a future period. The controller determines a contribution to the energy store level by the renewable energy generator for the future period based on the environmental prediction data, and compares the future energy store level with the predicted power consumption to determine the available energy for use over the future period. Each electrical appliance has a ranking in a hierarchy log and the controller may deny power supply to appliances if the future energy store level is insufficient for predicted power consumption. A back-up fuel-based generator 49 (diesel or fuel cell) may be provided.
