The modular building comprises adjacent first and second modular units 101 each having external sides, including floor 103, ceiling 104 and side-walls 105, defining an internal space. The internal spaces are separated by a side-wall of the first unit and fire-resistant material 110 provided thereon forms part of a fire compartment line defining a fire compartment containing the internal space of the second unit. Optionally, this fire compartment line is common to a further fire compartment containing the internal space of the first unit. The fire-resistant material may be provided on an exterior 105a and/or interior 105b surface. The external side wall of the first unit may comprise one or more columns and beams 107, with fire-resistant material around these forming part of the fire compartment line. The respective internal spaces of the units may be separated only by the side-wall of the first unit, e.g. the second unit being devoid of an external side-wall.
