Roadside warning system
The roadside warning system, particularly for use on ‘smart motorways’, comprises a plurality of spaced warning units 110a-n positioned along a section of highway 10, each unit comprising a processor, a motorist-activated warning unit actuator, a transmitted operative to transmit an activation signal to an upstream unit, a receiver operative to receive an activation signal from a downstream unit, and a visual alert. The processor is operative to (a) cause the transmitted to transmit an activation signal to a downstream warning unit in response to activation of the actuator, and (b) activate the visual alert in response to determining receipt of an activation signal from a downstream warning unit. Each unit is preferably operative to activate a single upstream unit. The transmitter and receiver are preferably operative to transmit and receive a deactivation signal. Also claimed is a method of generating a roadside warning in response to activation by a stranded motorist.
