PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic compound that reduces a change in the absorption spectrum of an electrochromic (EC) element due to a change in environmental temperature compared to the conventional art.SOLUTION: The present invention provides a 4,4'-bipyridine derivative represented by formula (1) (Xand Xindependently represent a substituted/unsubstituted alkyl group, a substituted/unsubstituted aryl group or substituted aralkyl group; Rto Rindependently represent H, a substituted/unsubstituted alkyl group, a substituted/unsubstituted alkoxy group, a substituted/unsubstituted aryl group, a substituted/unsubstituted heterocyclic group or a halogen atom).SELECTED DRAWING: None
