PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electrochromic (EC) compound having an absorption peak at a longer wavelength band than a viologen without a substituent group introduced to a carbon atom of 4,4'-bipyridinium at a coloring state, and in which an electrochemical oxidation-reduction progresses reversibly.SOLUTION: An organic compound is expressed by formula (1), is colored in a reduction state, and has an absorption peak at a wavelength band of 630-750 nm (in the formula, Ris an alkyl group or an alkoxy group; Xand Xare independently a substituted/unsubstituted alkyl group, a substituted/unsubstituted aryl group or a substituted/unsubstituted aralkyl group; and Aand Aare independently a univalent anion).SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
