To provide a mechanical parking device and a method of controlling the mechanical parking device, which can prompt a safety confirmation before the input by input means is completed.SOLUTION: There is installed a transport unit for transporting vehicles, comprising a boarding/alighting unit in which a boarding/alighting area is formed for a person to get on/off the vehicle placed on the transport unit, input means 4 to which safety information that the inside of the boarding/alighting unit is safe is input, and a control unit 6 for controlling transfer of the transfer unit based on an input signal from the input means. The control unit 6 comprises operation detecting means 13 for detecting whether the operation by the input means 4 is continuously operated for a set time or longer, and input completion determination means 14 for determining that the input to the input means 4 is completed based on the determination signal from the operation detecting means 13.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
