Loadbearing Brickwork Crosswall Construction
The traditional approach to the structural design of multi-storey buildings is to lay out a grid of columns and beams, add floors, and then introduce non-loadbearing walls to clad the structure, encase stair wells and lift shafts, sub-divide the internal space, provide fire breaks, etc. Very often, the walls are of brickwork and of sufficient thickness to carry the structural loads. Thus, not only is the loadbearing capacity of the brickwork completely wasted, but the structural frame has to be strengthened to carry the weight of the walls. This is both structurally inefficient and uneconomical. If thought is given to the layout of the walls, their loadbearing capacity can be exploited, and it will frequently be possible to dispense with the structural frame. By so doing, frame costs are saved, and there are considerable savings in construction time, plus a very valuable simplification of the building process.
