Built by the War Department in 1929, the Superintendent's Lodge at Chalmette National Cemetery (hereafter referred to as Lodge) is the fourth superintendent's residence to have served the cemetery since its founding in 1864. Occupied as a residence until 1979, the building was used as administrative offices until it was vacated as a result of flooding during Hurricane Katrina in September 2005. Greene's 1985 Historic Resource Study and Risks 1999 Cultural Landscape Report for the Chalmette Unit of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve have provided most of the background historical information. Additional archival materials, including historic photographs, building plans and specifications, and other material in the parks archives have also informed this report.
