Comportamento e Reforco de Elementos de Betao Armado Sujeitos a Accoes Ciclicas (Behaviour and Strengthening of Reinforced Concrete Elements under Cyclic Actions)
The thesis refers to the cyclic behavior of reinforced concrete elements with a particular emphasis on strengthening problems. The strong seismicity of Portuguese territory and the need to evaluate the behavior of the repaired and/or strengthened reinforced-concrete elements justify the importance of the research undertaken. A group of experimental tests to assess the behavior of reinforced concrete columns is performed. Some of the columns are then repaired and strengthened either by full jacketing or by local repairing, having been subjected to the same type of test afterwards. This procedure enables the evaluation of the efficiency of the repairing techniques and the quantification of the degree of monolithic behavior. A numerical model is developed in order to simulate the behavior of a reinforced concrete cross section under cyclic loading. This model, which is calibrated against the experimental results, is then included in a more general numerical one to describe the behavior of a plane frame under imposed cyclic horizontal displacements. The influence of the most relevant parameters which control the behavior of the cross section of reinforced concrete elements is analyzed by means of a parametric study.
