Report on the Ernestine Rupil George House, Matewan, Mingo County, West Virginia
The purpose of this report is to record the Ernestine Rupil George House, and the associated outbuilding on the property, in Matewan, Mingo County, West Virginia. Local tradition states that the George House was constructed on the site of the FAJ Ferrell House or incorporated portions of the Ferrell House into the present structure. The Ferrell House site is significant to the history of Matewan, Mingo County and West Virginia as the site where Ellison Hatfield was brought in 1882 after being shot by Tolbert. Palmer, and Randolph McCoy. He subsequently died here, feeding the fires of the infamous Hatfield McCoy feud. The inspection of the George House, along with records' search was to provide an architectural history of the house and verify the local anecdote. Neither the George House nor the Rupil House were considered to be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
