Chief Joseph Dam: Columbia River, Washington. Hydraulic Model Investigation
This report describes model investigations made to determine flow conditions at Chief Joseph Dam, both during the various phases of construction and with the completed structures of original and alternative design in place. Of particular interest were the development of suitable designs for the powerhouse intake canal and tailrace, the determination of the quantity of water that could be passed through temporary sluiceways during third-stage diversion, and the effects of variable approach velocities and current directions at the powerhouse intakes upon flow distribution within a typical penstock. Four undistorted scale models were used to accomplish the investigations for Chief Joseph Dam.
