The purpose of the project was to demonstrate the ability to build prestressed concrete pavement with current conventional construction equipment and procedures. The project is located on SR 114 (LR 21001) in Cumberland County which is a four-lane divided highway connecting US 11 and Interstate 81. There were some problems with the pavement that were construction-related. Cracking occurred over high prestressing strands, and there was also concrete shear failure due to faulty joint design and fabrication deficiencies. Suitable techniques were available to repair these cracks and shear failures. The adjacent shoulders show some deterioration and the longitudinal joint between the shoulder and pavement has become open and unsealed. This is due to shearing action caused by differential movement between the prestressed concrete slabs and shoulders.
