Response Spectral Analysis of Franklin Falls Dam, New Hampshire
During the New Hampshire earthquake of 18 January 1982, which occurred at lat. 43.5 deg N., long. 71.6 deg W., three records were obtained on the crest, abutment, and downstream sites at the Franklin Falls Dam about 8 km from the epicenter. The transverse component of the accelerograph located on the right abutment recorded a peak acceleration of 0.55 g, which is the highest acceleration ever recorded in the eastern United States. The purpose of this report were to find the pattern recognition of the response spectra on the crest, abutment, and downstream sites of an earth dam from an earthquake motion and to determine from the amplitude ratios (amplification factor) of the response spectra the natural periods of the dam and its foundation. By the spectral amplitude ratio of downstream to the right abutment, the natural periods of 0.40 sec (2.5 Hz), 0.303 sec (3.3 Hz), and 0.454 (2.2 Hz) were obtained for L-(longitudinal), V- (vertical), and T-(transverse) components, respectively. The natural periods of dam were 0.40 sec (2.5 Hz), 0.25 sec (4 Hz), and 0.454 sec (2.2 Hz) for L-, V- and T-components determined from both the amplitude ratios of (1) crest to right abutment and (2) crest to downstream. The report contains ground motion records and response spectra for nine channels of strong-motion data obtained at the dam site.
