During 1996, a total of 191,300 privately financed, nonsubsidized, unfurnished, rental apartments in buildings of five units or more were completed in permit-issuing areas in the United States. This was a 23 percent increase over the 155,000 like completions in 1995, and an 84 percent increase over the 104,000 such units completed in 1994. It was the largest number of such completions since the 214,300 units in 1990.
