Sulphur Extended Asphalt
Supply and cost of asphalt binders used in pavements have been affected significantly by the energy crisis and inflation. As a result, efforts to discover satisfactory substitutes for asphalt binder have greatly intensified. Sulphur has emerged as a promising replacement for asphalt. It is readily available in large quantities and is less expensive than asphalt in some areas of the country. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) encouraged the states to plan demonstration projects on the use of sulphur extended asphalt (SEA) which consisted of a blend of sulphur and asphalt binder. Field trials had demonstrated the full-scale construction capability of the process.
