Sulphur Extended Asphalt
The purpose of the project is to evaluate the comparative performance and costs between conventional ID-2 wearing course and a sulfur extended ID-2 wearing course (30% sulfur, 70% AC-20). The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) encouraged the states to plan demonstration projects on the use of sulfur extended asphalt (SEA) as a means to find more economical and satisfactory substitutes for asphalt binder. The evaluations indicate that the service life of SEA mixtures can be considered equal to the conventional ID-2 mixes. However, at the present time (1991) it is not economical to pursue the use of SEA because sulfur is more expensive than asphalt and nearly twice as much sulfur is needed to replace an equal volume of asphalt.
