Control and Prevention of Deterioration of Concrete Bridge Decks
This report gives a brief historical summary of concrete mix design, and bridge deck design in Michigan from the inception of the project in 1963 to the present date. The original project called for the evaluation of Michigan's principles and practices of structural design, construction, and maintenance by means of a detailed field survey of a number of five and ten-year old bridge decks. Because of rapid technological advances, both in Michigan and in other states, changes in design and construction techniques were adopted with such rapidity that the original data collected for the project were rendered obsolete. The report cites some pertinent literature, presents data concerning Michigan's use of de-icing salts, and makes observations on current bridge deck practices in the state. As of the end of 1976, Michigan now specifies epoxy coated rebars in the top mat and 3 in. of clear cover in all new bridge decks. Single-stage construction is used in lower traffic areas and two-stage, with either 1-1/2 -in. latex modified concrete or 2-in. low-slump concrete is used in high traffic areas.
