Demonstration Project: Roller Compacted Concrete Utilizing Phosphogypsum
A phosphogypsum containing roller compacted concrete driveway and parking area was constructed at the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research, Bartow, FL to demonstrate the advantages of using phosphogypsum for this type of road building. Mix design criteria, pavement design, and construction cost are reported. Construction methodology is described and shown. After construction field monitoring defined strength development and characteristics. Samples were subjected to abrasion testing and nondestructive Dynaflect testing was performed on the finished road. Since phosphogypsum contains very low level of radium the pavement was monitored for radiation to confirm that there would be no advese health affects. The importance of aggregate quality and mix moisture content are discussed.
