A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The purpose of the report is the evaluation of Sprinkle Treatment of asphalt surface as compared to conventional treatment, ID-2 Wearing Course. Sprinkle treatment is intended to provide high frictional characteristics using a minimal amount of high quality aggregate. The evaluation is based on a 5 year collection of data as performed on two sections each of pavements (Sprinkle treated as compared to Control sections of conventional ID-2 wearing course) by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. The most significant results were in cost and skid resistance. The cost of sprinkle treatment increased 16% over the conventional. Sprinkle treated demonstrated superior skid resistance to the control sections. It is concluded that the sprinkle treatment is not a cost-effective alternative, at this time, because of the current supply of approved reasonably priced quality aggregate in Pennsylvania.
