Sprinkle Treatment of Bituminous Concrete for Improved Skid Resistance
This report describes the construction procedures and related testing conducted by Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) on its first sprinkle bituminous concrete pavement. Approximately a 3-mile section of Rural Arterial Highway was resurfaced with 1-inch of wearing course hot mix. The sprinkle treatment consisted of an application of precoated gravel chips with a special type spreader immediately behind the paver. In lieu of sprinkle treatment, control material consisting of hot mix only was paved on about 50 percent of the project.
