Statewide Investigation of Flexible Pavements
The Maryland statewide investigation of flexible pavements reported herein was initiated in 1955 with the Bureau of Public Roads. The emphasis of the study has been on the deflection testing of high-type flexible paving sections throughout the State. Field measurements on pavement performance such as cracking and rutting were also included. The main purpose is to determine the structural behavior of flexible pavements in terms of maximum deflection measured by the Benkelman beam under the state environment. The report describes the review and evaluation of all deflection data obtained in Maryland during the past thirteen years relative to the structural behavior or adequacy of flexible paving sections. Correlations were made between deflection and the following variables: (a) location of the wheelpath, (b) seasonal changes, (c) pavement age, (d) paved shoulder, (e) subgrade soil type, (f) pavement structural value, and (g) resurfacing thicknessess.
