SR 5, Longview Wye to Rocky Point, Washington
The project entails 6-laning an existing 4-lane freeway in Cowlitz County, Washington. Of major impact will be the displacement of persons and businesses because of the new construction. One result of by-passing the Davis Terrace slide area is to force involvement with the Kelso Elks Memorial golf course. However the Highway Dept. through the services of a landscape architect, and working in close coordination with the golf course board of trustees arrived at a solution which allowed optimum use of the area for highway purposes, as well as allowing room for the reconstruction of the golf course which will restore it to an equal or better standard than now exists. Two alternates to the proposed route were considered. One of the two alternate routes considered would change the land use of the actual roadway and would have a major adverse impact on the ecological systems and environmental character of the adjacent land. The effect of air pollution and noise levels would play a major role in disrupting the serenity of semi-wilderness area.
