A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
At the Department of Steel Construction, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, a comprehensive research program is in progress concerning structural application of sheeting panels. Interest has mainly centred on C-shaped panels which are particularly suitable, because of their shape, for use in structural surface elements such as walls, floors and roofs. When used in combination with other materials, they satisfy requirements relating not only to strength but also to thermal, accoustic and fire insulation. Within the framework of this subproject, the effect of transverse loading on C-shaped panels was studied. A brief description of the problems involved and a summary of some previous research in this field are given. Details are given of the extensive experimental investigations performed in order to study the loadbearing and deformation properties of C-shaped panels. The results thus obtained are then used for the construction of an analytical model and for the verification of the theoretical investigations. A comparison of the experimentally obtained ultimate loads and deformations with those derived theoretically is made.
