Evaluation of Road Construction by Surcharge Over Muskeg
In 1974 the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities constructed the Kenai River Crossing Project over muskeg and marsh deposits using stage construction and a static surcharge. Copious settlement and pore pressure data were taken during construction as this was the first time this technique was used by the State of Alaska. This report evaluates the embankment settlement calculations by comparing them to the measured field settlements. It was found that the calculated settlements, using the Compression Index, over-estimated the actual settlements by a factor of two. Recalculations were made using the ratio of the compression measured in consolidation testing to the original sample thickness. This method gave a much better agreement with measured field settlements.
