Effects of Pavement Texture on Skid Resistance
This report covers the results of an investigation into the characteristics of typical Ohio pavement surfaces relative to surface texture. By means of measurement of surface texture depth by the sand patch method, and by skid tests at 40 and 55 miles per hour speeds, information on typical values of speed gradients and wear factors was developed. Some conclusions are drawn on the skid resistance levels found on typical pavements and on the use of these parameters to describe pavement surface friction properties. Recommendations are made for reducing in the future the number of pavements which exhibit skid resistance problems.
