Pavement Surface Texture as Related to Skid Resistance
The report describes the development of an instrument to accurately measure a pavement surface profile and the methodology used to consider and correlate several parameters of the pavement surface profile from microprofile measurements. These parameters included (1) the number and average heights of peaks, (2) surface length, (3)variation of heights and peaks in short lengths, (4) rounded profile by 'moving array' technique, (5) number and average heights of macro and micro peaks and (6) the maximum heights. These parameters were unsuccessfully correlated with skid resistance measurements at 20 and 50 mph velocities as measured by a two-wheeled skid resistance trailer. The report concluded that (1) a better technique of data smoothing can probably be developed, (2) more than one pavement sample per test section should be taken and (3) more than one microprofile per sample should be obtained.
