Tests of Structure Orientation Spillway, and Lock Emergency Gate, Barkley Lock and Dam, Cumberland River, Kentucky. Hydraulic Model Investigation
Hydraulic model investigations for Barkley Dam were concerned with the orientation of the lock, spillway, and powerhouse structures; determination of the feasibility of discharging the lock culverts into the spillway stilling basin; development of optimum designs for the laterally sloping stilling basin, training walls, and lock culvert discharge manifolds; and verification of hydraulic loads on the lock emergency gate. Three undistorted models were used in accomplishing the investigations: (a) a 1:120-scale comprehensive model which reproduced about 3 miles of the river and included the lock, the spillway, the powerhouse, and portions of the earth embankments on each side of these concrete structures; (b) a 1:36-scale section model which reproduced five spillway gate bays and the downstream lock guide wall, and included the lock culvert discharge manifolds; and (c) a 1:25-scale model of the lock emergency gate. Model tests verified the adequacy of the proposed position and alignment for the lock structure. Navigation conditions were improved by the removal of a portion of an existing railroad embankment located upstream from the spillway, and by a slight realignment of the right bank of the exit channel.
