Traffic Marking Materials Experiment
Described is the physical evaluation of various traffic paint and bead combinations as part of a national cooperative evaluation program. The paint and bead combinations were applied to portland cement concrete and bituminous concrete pavement surfaces as actual traffic marking stripes performing under field conditions of traffic and weather over a period of approximately one year. The evaluation consisted of periodic field inspections using a special dual camera device which simultaneously records a nearly horizontal photographic negative for photometric analysis in the office and a vertical negative which is made into a positive photographic print for later analysis by the human eye. The overall evaluation is based on the combined photometric and direct visual analysis and a comparison is made between the traffic marking materials combinations. In addition to this photometric analysis the 'Night Visual Comparison' system of rating the night time effectiveness of a traffic marking stripe is explained. (Author)
