Effect of Loading Rate on Compressive Strength of Cement Mortar Cubes
Cement mortar cubes were prepared in accordance with AASHTO Designation T 106-72 and tested for compressive strength at loading rates of approximately 20, 35, 50, 65, and 80 seconds at ages of 1, 3, 7, 14, and 28 days. Type I and Type II Cements were used. The data were analyzed statistically to determine if there was a significant difference in compressive strength of mortar cubes when tested over the range of loading rates allowed in T 106-72. It was determined that there is a difference in the compressive strengths with the trend toward higher compressive strengths of mortar cubes tested at faster loading rates. It was concluded that the effect of loading rate on the compressive strength could be reduced by restricting the allowable range of loading rates to 65 - 35 seconds.
