Pavement Roughness and Deflection Studies of Alabama Highways
The report describes results of pavement roughness and deflection tests conducted since 1961 on selected interstate and primary highways. The purpose is to obtain data for evaluating pavement structure design as practiced by the highway department. Roughness measurements were made on both rigid and flexible pavements, while deflections were measured only on flexible pavements. About 28 different pavement projects were observed using each method of measurement. The following findings are mentioned: Outer wheel path deflections are larger than those of the inner wheel path and more accurately describe the structural condition of the pavement; The average increase in roughness per year was about 3- and 4-inches per mile for rigid and flexible pavements, respectively. (BPR Abstract)
