Investigation of Wooden Well Screens for Grenada, Enid, and Sardis Dams
Studies were made in a well-testing tank at the Waterways Experiment Station to investigate the performance of the proposed well filters and wooden screens. In the study of the wells for Grenada and Enid Dams, comparative tests were made on wooden pipe perforated with slots and with circular holes. These tests included observation of the stability of the filters with regard to the perforated well screens and the foundation sand, and measurement of the head loss through the well screen and filter for the different screens and filters tested. The tests to determine the stability of the filter around the wells at Grenada and Enid Dams indicated that the proposed filter was satisfactory for both the slots and circular holes, and also satisfactorily drained the fine sand used as a foundation material in the tests. The head loss through the filter gravel and screen, as measured in these tests, was approximately the same for both 6 slots, 5/16 in. by 2-1/2 in., and 36 holes, 3/8 in. size, per linear foot of well screen. The head loss was about 0.25 ft for a flow of 10 gpm per linear foot of well screen. (Author)
