Kahului Harbor West Breakwater Repair, Maui, Hawaii
Upon receipt of funds, construction plans will be completed, and construction initiated to repair and protect approximately 100 feet of the existing breakwater trunk of the Kahului Harbor west breakwater. The Chief of Engineers, by law, is required to maintain the existing breakwater protection for Kahului Harbor. Preconstruction planning was initiated in March 1972. The repair work would alter the physical condition of the west breakwater by the placement of 19- and 35-ton concrete units on the seaward slope and the construction of concrete ribs on the cap of the breakwater. The structural integrity of the breakwaters is necessary to maintain the continued safe use of the harbor facilities. A safe harbor is required to maintain the island's economic well-being. No major disruptions to the environment are expected since the project involves maintenance of an existing structure. The placement of the concrete components will temporarily disturb the marine environment of the immediate area. Air pollution control measures will be implemented to minimize adverse effects; however, some dust will be evident over the coral fill area during construction operations.
