Planning Study to Model and Monitor Coal Pile Runoff. Phase I
The report describes a planning study for predicting and monitoring the hydrologic and chemical characteristics of effluent streams resulting from precipitation impacting on open storage of coal. It includes: a survey of utilities on storage habits and treatment systems for coal pile runoff, the development of a runoff model, a work plan to field test the model, and procedures for the field program. The survey includes information from 81 plants on size, shape, and handling practices for coal stocks and criteria used to design coal pile runoff treatment. The model developed in this program is in two sections: a hydraulic model TRCH20 and a quality model TRCCOAL. The model is capable of describing the surface and interior reaction in the coal pile as well as in the groundwater. A sensitivity analysis of several model parameters is also provided.
