Field Shear Strength of Dredged Material in the Chesapeake Bay Area of Maryland
This report presents the results of field vane shear strength tests which were performed at seventeen boring locations in four confined disposal sites around the Chesapeake Bay area in the State of Maryland. Undisturbed tube samples were taken from the same locations for laboratory analysis. The field shear strength tests were conducted using a Nilcon Vane Borer at all locations. An Acker vane apparatus and a Pilcon laboratory vane device were also used at one of the sites for the purpose of correlation with the Nilcon apparatus. The shear strength results were lowest at mid-depth of the dredged material. The results were highest near the surface. The shear strength was found to increase with the increase in distance from the overflow weir at any given site.
