Culvert Restoration Techniques
The objective of this project was to develop materials for use as a guide for engineers involved in the restoration of highway drainage culverts. Information on current practice was obtained from all California Department of Transportation districts, through hydraulics and maintenance engineers, from review of current literature on culvert restoration practices, and from contract with industry representatives. District engineers in other states were also surveyed to determine the extent to which culvert restoration is practiced there. Culvert restoration, as an alternative to replacement, was found to be a new approach which is not widely practiced. Since many variables affect the selection of an appropriate restoration technique, the emphasis in the report is on process rather than identification of exact solutions. Guidelines are provided to assist in classifying types of culvert wear. Appropriate techniques are identified and described, and factors to be considered when selecting the most appropriate technique are discussed.
