Model Studies to Determine the Optimum Practical Rearrangement of Timberwork to Ensure Minimum Resistance Values for Rectangular Shafts
This research was conducted to determine optimum configurations of rectangular shaft supports, lining, and fixtures to reduce head losses. Model studies in a specially designed wind tunnel provided information useful as a guide to remedial measures on old shafts or to design of new shafts. The research disclosed that airway resistance could readily be reduced 25 percent by relatively minor modifications in the timber or steel-supporting sets. Potential annual savings in power costs are given. The methods described can be applied to reduce airway resistance in mines with severe ventilation problems. (Author)
