Experimental and Analytical Investigation of Seismic Retrofit of Structures with Supplemental Damping. Part 3. Viscous Damping Walls
Comparative studies were carried out based on analyses and experimental studies using a 1/3-scale RC frame. This report presents an evaluation of visous damping walls used as additional braces. Results show that this retrofit scheme produces large deformation reduction. While a large amount of damping is introduced, viscous walls also introduce significant stiffness to the structure, leading to an increase in the total shear. However, the increase in total shear force includes the increased forces in dampers, which is synchronous with structural member forces, therefore resulting in a net decrease in the member shear forces.
