Experimental and Analytical Investigation of Seismic Retrofit of Structures with Supplemental Damping. Part 2. Friction Devices
This is the second in a series of National Center for Earthquake Engineering Research (NCEER) technical reports by the authors addressing capabilities and limitations of passive energy dissipation systems through performance comparative studies. Friction devices are considered in this report through a combined experimental and analytical study. The 1:3 scale reinforced concrete frame, the same one used in the first study, was again used for experimental verification. The results show that the retrofit of reinforced concrete structures with friction damping devices can produce satisfactory seismic response. The damping enhancement contributes to the reduction of maximum deformations and only slightly modifies the structural forces transmitted to the foundation.
