Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, Maryland: Historical and Architectural Data
The purpose of this report on Fort McHenry reflects recent evolution in historic preservation philosophy. The construction history presented in it will assist the National Park Service in preserving most of the changes and construction that occurred at the Fort during its years as an active military post. Earlier thinking recommended restoring it to its 1812 configuration. The report includes a general narrative history of physical exterior or major structural changes in the Fort (which occurred sporadically based on war or the threat of war) and then separate summaries of each building's structural history. In addition there are an architect's description of stabilization needs, a glossary of structural fortification terms, a bibliography, drawings, photographs, and a very brief description of archeological work and needs. The report is both a practical guide for those planning structural work on Fort McHenry and a useful, unduplicated history on the philosophy and work that went into its frequent changes and adaptations.
