Long Term Studies of Consolidation and Shear Strength Increases In Soft Foundation Soil
This report summarizes the state-of-the-art developments in analysis of consolidation and shear strength increase in soft foundation soil. Five case studies of the field performance of soft soil foundations under highway embankments were analyzed and reported. It was found that the long-term gain in shear strength ranged from three to five times the initial strength prior to loading. The shear strength gain in soft soil foundations may be predicted with reasonable accuracy based on field measurements of the dissipations in excess pore water pressure or settlement data. A method for developing construction control charts based on the theory of soil consolidation, shear strength gain, and foundation stability analysis, is presented.
