Radial Gate Evaluation, Caballo Dam, New Mexico
Two 50-foot wide by 21-foot high radial gates are used to control flow through the spillway at Cabollo Dam. The spillway gates were designed in 1936. To control wave action, the gates were retrofitted with a 1.5-foot high splashboard. The splashboard is not meant to store water. The gate arm assemblies consist of four wide flange beams supporting the faceplate at the three horizontal girders. The arms pivot about a 10-inch diameter pin and a graphite-insert bronze bushing. The radial gates are supported at the pin bearing assembly bolted to the cantilevered pin. The gates are positioned by a float/counterweight system. The Caballo gates are similar in design to the Sumner Dam and Rye Patch Dam gates. (PB97-165930 and PB97-162887).
