Maryland's Two Experimental Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement Projects I-83 - Baltimore/Harrisburg Expressway
Two Maryland experimental continuously reinforced concrete pavements were constructed on the Baltimore-Harrisburg Expressway (I-83) in 1959 and 1960. On both projects the pavement and sub-base thicknesses were uniform throughout the length of the contract. Project 31 contains steel percentages of 0.5%, 0.6%, and 0.7% with bar sizes of numbers 4, 5, and 6, while in project 53 all test sites contained a steel percentage of 0.6% and bar size number 5, except the one designated as site 4-W.W.F. in which a welded wire fabric of 6/0 gage with 6% mesh was used. Traffic data showing the A.D.T., number of trucks, and 18-kip equivalent loads for the ten year observation period for this project is included as is the climatological information showing the variations of temperature and precipitation.
