The Dynamic Foundation Interaction of Multistory Frames
The effects of foundation interaction upon the dynamic response of buildings during an earthquake were investigated. To simulate this effect under laboratory conditions three models were constructed in which foundation (ground) and structures were combined. Two of these were combined plane frames with a Young's modulus of foundation, Ef = 45 kg/sq cm and Ef = 405 kg/sq cm respectively. The third was an asymmetric space frame with a Young's modulus of foundation, Ef = 45 kg/sq cm. Elastomers, compounds of Adiprene L-100 or L-167, were used to simulate the foundation medium, and into this the footings of the plane and space frames, all of which had five storeys, were embedded. Analysis was in two stages. In the first stage the resonance behavior of these combined models was analyzed. In the second the dynamic response analysis was made. (Author)
