The book attempts to trace ways for planners and public officials to extract the information most relevant to urban problems from the growing corpus of urban statistics. The major factors in developing a metropolitan information system oriented towards probing complex issues are analyzed. The planning function is reexamined to determine the information essential to achieving its underlying objectives. A synthesis of new concepts applicable to urban planning from such disparate fields as systems analysis, social policy planning, information sciences and sample surveys is undertaken. (Author)
