Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, Maryland-W. Virginia: John Brown's Fort, Architectural Data
The structure known as John Brown's fort was built in 1848 as the engine/guard house for the government armory and arsenal at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. But after October, 1859, when John Brown used it to defend his men, the structure has been recognized as a shrine, commemorating that event and that man. As such, it has been moved and reassembled four times and still stands close to, but not on, its original location. This report is an architect's description of the structure's physical evolution and present condition. It has been done to support the building's partial restoration and stabilization in the present location. Full restoration or reconstruction to the structure's original appearance on its original location will require further study. Photographs and measured drawings accompany the narrative. (Portions of this document are not fully legible due to the historical nature of some of the material)
