An Analysis of the NFPA 1977 National Fire Experience Survey

Based on the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1977 National Fire Experience Survey, an analysis of four fire experience measures -- number of fires per thousand people, number of civilian deaths per million people, number of civilian injuries per million, and dollar loss per capita -- was undertaken. In addition, the relationship of these measures to community size and fixed property use also were analyzed. The analysis resulted in several findings: (1) County fire departments experience similar fire rates to non-county departments; (2) The largest and smallest communities have the highest fire rates; (3) Residential fire rates are higher than non-residential rates in terms of deaths, injuries, and dollar loss.
