Evaluation of Sprayed Polyurethane Foam Roofing and Protective Coatings
This report documents a study to evaluate sprayed polyurethane foam (PUF) roofing and protective coatings for use in reroofing at Army installations. Manufacturers, field applications, and literature were surveyed to identify advantages and disadvantages associated with the use of these systems. It was found that the service life of this type of roof system depends on the skill of the applicator and the capability of the coating material to resist the effects of climate and weather. PUF can be used as an alternative to conventional built-up roofing (BUR) for new roofs, or to replace failed roofs. However, because these systems are relatively new (and long-term durability statistics are not available), they should only be used on carefully selected Army roofs. New construction is limited to the use of silicone-coated PUF over concrete roof decks, as required by Corps of Engineers Guide Specification (CEGS)-07540. (Author)
