Examination of the history of Dinosaur National Monument reveals ten themes that form a convenient framework for this and future studies of the Monument. These themes are as follows: Exploration to 1900; Early settlement of the area, 1850-1880; Ranching to 1900 (Cattle and Sheep); The development of trails and transportation; The outlaws, 1870-1910; Mining and Lumbering; Ranching after 1900 (cattle and sheep); Conservation and Federal Resource Development after 1891; Water resource development after 1900; and Scientific exploration and monument development after 1900.
