Urbanization and Flooding in Shades Creek Basin, Jefferson County, Alabama
The magnitude of the 25-, 50-, 100-, and 500-year floods for drainage basins having various degrees of urban development in Jefferson County, Alabama may be estimated from the graphical and mathematical relations presented in this report. The basic equations use the relations among drainage area, lag time, a length-slope parameter, and percent imperviousness for a particular drainage basin. The relations presented in this report, were used to compute water-surface profiles along Shades Creek. Flood profiles and maps were determined on the basis of main channel conditions as surveyed prior to December 1973 but assuming complete urbanization within the remaining part of the drainage basin.
